April 24, 2016 – Letters From Home – Opening or Cursing

Opening or Cursing

Revelation 3:14-22 – New International Version (NIV)
14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

How does Jesus identify himself to the “angel of the church in Laodicea” (verse 14)?

What do the deeds of the church of Laodicea show Jesus about them (verse 15)?

What does Jesus wish about the people of the church of Laodicea (verse 15)?

Why is Jesus going to spit them out of His mouth (verse 16)?

In your opinion, why do the people of the church of Laodicea say “I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing” (verse 17)?

What do the people of Laodicea not realize about themselves (verse 17)?

Why did Jesus want the people of Laodicea to buy from Him “gold refined in the fire” (verse 18)?

What kind of clothes did Jesus want them to buy to “cover your shameful nakedness” (verse 18)?

Who does Jesus “rebuke and discipline” (verse 19)?

In your opinion, why does Jesus command “be earnest” before he commands “repent” (verse 19)?

Where is Jesus standing and knocking (verse 20)?

When will Jesus “come in and eat with that person” (verse 20)?

Where will the victorious have be given a right to sit (verse 21)?

In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?

Hebrews 12:1-6 - New International Version (NIV)
1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

What are Christians surrounded by (verse 1)?
In your opinion, what is the “everything that hinders” that we are to throw off (verse 1)?
How are we to run “the race marked out for us” (verse 1)?
Who is the “pioneer and perfecter of faith” (verse 2)?
Why did Jesus endure the cross (verse 2)?
In your opinion, how does considering Jesus “who endured such opposition from sinners” help us to “not grow weary and lose heart” (verse 3)?
In your opinion, who, in their “struggle against sin” did resist to the point of shedding blood (verse 4)?
What does the quotation say not to lose when we are rebuked by the Lord (verse 5)?
Who does the Lord discipline (verse 6)?
How many of the people God accepts does He chasten (verse 6)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?
In your opinion, how does Paul in Hebrews 12:1-6 when he says to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles” give a vivid illustration of how to obey the command of Jesus in Revelation 3:14-22 to “be earnest and repent”?

John 14:15-27 - New International Version (NIV)
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

What does Jesus tell us to do if we love Him (verse 15)?
Who will Jesus ask to give us “another advocate to help you and be with you forever” (verse 16)?
Why can the world not accept the Spirit of truth (verse 17)?
Where will the Spirit of truth be for those who love Jesus (verse 17)?
How will Jesus not leave us (verse 18)?
Who will live because Jesus lives (verses 15 and 19)?
In your opinion, what does it mean that Jesus is in the Father and in us and we in Him (verse 20)?
Who will be “loved by my Father” (verse 21)?
Who else will love the one who is “loved by my Father” (verse 21)?
Who ask “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world” (verse 22)?
In your opinion, what does it mean to “obey my teaching” (verse 23)?
Who will not obey the teaching of Jesus (verse 24)?
Who will “teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (verse 26)?
What does Jesus give to us (verse 27)?
In your opinion, how does someone “not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” as commanded by Jesus (verse 27)”
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?
In your opinion, how, in a world filled with things that hinder and sin that entangles and opposition from sinners and struggle against sin to the point of shedding His blood as Paul talks about in Hebrews 12:1-6, can Jesus have peace and give that peace to others in John 14:15-27?
In your opinion, how does Jesus in His statement that “I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” in Revelation 3:14-22 help us to understand what He meant in John 14:15-27 when He talked about keeping His commands and obeying His teaching?

Revelation 16:8-21 – New International Version (NIV)
8 “The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire. 9 They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.
10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in agony 11 and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done.
12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. 13 Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.
15 “Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”
16 Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.
17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. 19 The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found. 21 From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.”

What was the sun allowed to do when the fourth angel pour out his bowl (verse 8)?
How did the people who were “seared by the intense heat” respond to God (verse 9)?
In your opinion, why did they refuse “to repent and glorify him” (verse 9)?
Where did the fifth angel pour out his bowl that caused the beast’s kingdom to be plunged into darkness (verse 10)?
What did the people who “gnawed their tongues in agony” do (verses 10 and 11)?
What did the people who “gnawed their tongues in agony” refuse to do (verses 10 and 11)?
Why did the sixth angel pour “out his bowl on the great river Euphrates” (verse 12)?
What came “out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet” (verse 13)?
What are the kings of the whole world to be gathered together for (verse 14)?
Who is blessed (verse 15)?
Where will the kings gather together (verse 16)?
Where does the seventh angel pour out his bowl (verse 17)?
In your opinion, why does the loud voice from the throne in the temple say “it is done” (verse 17)?
What happened next (verse 18)?
Whose cup was filled with “the wine of the fury of his wrath” (verse 19)?
What could not be found (verse 20)?
Why did the people curse God (verse 21)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?

In your opinion, what is the difference between the people who love Jesus and keep His commandments in John 14:15-27 and the people who curse God in Revelation 16:8-21?
In your opinion, what does the quote the Paul gives in Hebrews 12:1-6 that “the Lord disciplines the one he loves” help us to understand about the angels pouring out the bowls in Revelation 16:8-21?

In your opinion, is the statement that Jesus made in Revelation 3:14-22 “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” a promise that any of the people who cursed God in Revelation 16:8-21 could have claimed?
In your opinion, what do these passages, from Revelation, Hebrews and John show us about ourselves today?

April 17, 2016 – Letters From Home – Doors and Names

Doors and Names

Revelation 3:7-13 – New International Version (NIV)
7 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.
11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. 12 The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. 13 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

In your opinion, what is Jesus telling the church of Philadelphia when He says He “is holy and true” (verse 7)?

In your opinion, what is Jesus telling the church of Philadelphia when He says He “holds the key of David” (see Isaiah 22:22) (verse 7)?

Who can open or shut what Jesus opens or shuts (verse 7)?

What has Jesus placed in from of the church in Philadelphia (verse 8)?

How has the church in Philadelphia honored Jesus in spite of having “little strength” (verse 8)?

Who do “those who are of the synagogue of Satan” claim to be (verse 9)?

In your opinion, why will Jesus make “those who are of the synagogue of Satan” but are liars “come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you” (verse 9)?

Why will the church in Philadelphia be kept from “the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth” (verse 10)?

What are those in the church in Philadelphia instructed to do “so that no one will take your crown” (verse 11)?

In your opinion, why is it an appropriate reward for the people church of Sardis that Jesus will make then “a pillar in the temple of my God” (verse 12)?

When will they leave the temple (verse 12)?

What will be written on the “victorious” (verse 12)?

Who is speaking to the churches (verse 13)?

In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?

2 Corinthians 12:5-10 - New International Version (NIV)
5 “I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. 6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, 7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

What will Paul boast about himself (verse 5)?
Why does Paul “refrain” from saying true things about himself (verse 6)?
Why was Paul given “a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me” (verse 7)?
How many times did Paul plead “with the Lord to take it away from me” (verse 8)?
What is sufficient for Paul (verse 9)?
Where is God’s power made perfect (verse 9)?
Why will Paul “boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses” (verse 9)?
For whose sake will Paul “delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties” (verse 10)?
In your opinion, what does Paul mean when he says “for when I am weak, then I am strong” (verse 10)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?
In your opinion, what does the church in Philadelphia who has “little strength” but who Jesus says has “kept my word and have not denied my name” in Revelation 3:7-13 show us about the message that Paul received from God in 2 Corinthians 12:5-10 that “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”?

John 14:1-14 - New International Version (NIV)
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

What did Jesus tell the disciples not to let be troubled (verse 1)?
Who were the disciples to “believe in” in addition to God (verse 1)?
What does Jesus Father’s house have (verse 2)?
What will Jesus do if He goes and prepares a place for the disciples (verse 3)?
Where do the disciples know the way to (verse 4)?
Who said “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way” (verse 5)?
In your opinion, what did Jesus mean when He said “I am the way and the truth and the life” (verse 6)?
What is the only way to the Father (verse 6)?
If we know who do we know the Father (verse 7)?
What did Philip say was enough (verse 8)?
Who is living in Jesus doing His work (verse 10)?
If the disciples did not believe Jesus, then what did He tell them to “believe on” (verse 11)?
What will those who believe in Jesus do (verse 12)?
Why will Jesus do “whatever you ask in my name” (verses 13 and 14)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?
In your opinion, how does Paul’s statement in 2 Corinthians 12:5-10 that “when I am weak, then I am strong” help us to understand more about the fulfillment of Jesus statement in John 14:1-14 that “whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father”?
In your opinion, how does Jesus statement in Revelation 3:7-11 to the church in Philadelphia that “I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name” help us to have a greater appreciation for His statement in John 14:1-14 that “very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father”?

Revelation 14:1-13 – New International Version (NIV)
1 “Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as first fruits to God and the Lamb. 5 No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.
6 Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. 7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
8 A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’ which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” 12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.
13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”
“Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

What did the 144,000 who were with the Lamb have written on their foreheads (verse 1)?
How did John describe the sound from heaven that he heard (verse 2)?
How had the 144,000 who learn the new song come to heaven (verse 3)?
Who were they “purchased from among mankind and offered as first fruits to” (verse 4)?
In your opinion, what is the “eternal gospel” that the angel was going to proclaim (verse 6)?
What has come (verse 7)?
Who drank the “maddening wine” of the adulteries of Babylon the Great (verse 8)?
What will happen to the one who “worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead of on their hand” (verses 9 and 10)?
In your opinion, what does it mean to worship the beast or to receive its mark (verses 9 and 10)?
When will there be rest for those who worshiped the beast or receives its mark (verse 11)?
What is called or from “the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus” (verse 12)?
Who is blessed (verse 13)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?

In your opinion, what is the eternal contrast between the ones who believe in God and in Jesus that Jesus is talking to in John 14:1-14 and the ones who receive the mark of the beast or his name in Revelation 14:1-13?
In your opinion, how does God’s statement to Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:5-10 that “my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” help us to understand the 144,000 who were “purchased from among mankind and offered as first fruits to God and the Lamb” in Revelation 14:1-13?

In your opinion, why is it appropriate that those who “have kept my word and have not denied my name” in Revelation 3:7-13 are rewarded by having Jesus write on them “the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name” and those who worship “the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand” will be tormented forever without rest?
In your opinion, what do these passages, from Revelation, 2 Corinthians and John show us about ourselves today?

April 10, 2016 – Letters From Home – Reputation versus Book of Life

Reputation versus Book of Life

Revelation 3:1-6 – New International Version (NIV)
1 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.
4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

What does He “who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars” know about the reputation of the church of Sardis (verse 1)?

What does He know about the reality of the church of Sardis (verse 1)?

In your opinion, what could cause this difference between the reputation and the reality (verse 1)?

What should the church do for “what remains and is about to die” (verse 2)?

How are the deeds found “in the sight of my God” (verse 2)?

What is the church in Sardis to do after they remember and hold fast to what they “have received and heard” (verse 3)?

How will the one “who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars” come if the church in Sardis does not “wake up” (verse 3)?

Why will the “few people” in Sardis who have not soiled the clothes walk with Jesus (verse 4)?

In your opinion, why will “the one who is victorious” also be dressed in white (verse 5)?

From what will Jesus “never blot out the name of that person” (verse 5)?

Who will Jesus “acknowledge that name before” (verse 5)?

What is “whoever has ears” commanded to hear (verse 6)?

In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?

Romans 3:22-31 - New International Version (NIV)
22 “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.”

Who is the given the righteousness that “is given through faith in Jesus Christ” (verse 22)?
What have all, including all Jews and all Gentiles, done (verse 23)?
How are all justified freely (verse 24)?
How is Christ’s “shedding of his blood” as a “sacrifice of atonement” to be received (verse 25)?
In your opinion, why had God “in his forbearance . . . left the sins committed beforehand go unpunished” (verse 23)?
How does God presenting “Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood” serve to “demonstrate his righteousness at the present time” (verse 26)?
Where is boasting (verse 27)?
In your opinion, what is the difference between the “law that requires works” and the “law that requires faith” (verse 27)?
How is a person justified (verse 28)?
What is apart from that justification (verse 28)?
How are the circumcised and the uncircumcised both justified (verse 30)?
In your opinion, how does Paul in Romans 3:22-31 not nullify but uphold the law “by this faith” (verse 31)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?
In your opinion, how does Paul’s discussion about being justified by faith in Romans 3:22-31 help to understand why Jesus tells the people of the church of Sardis “I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead” in Revelation 3:1-6?

John 9:35-41 - New International Version (NIV)
35 “Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”
What did Jesus ask the blind man who He had healed on the Sabbath and who the Pharisees had thrown out of the synagogue (verse 35)?
How does the man respond (verse 36)?
In your opinion, what is the significance of Jesus telling the man who had been born blind “you have now seen him” (verse 37)?
How does the man, who now sees, respond to Jesus (verse 38)?
Why has Jesus “come into this world” (verse 39)?
In your opinion, what does Jesus mean when He says “so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind” (verse 39)?
What did the Pharisees who were with Jesus ask Him (verse 40)?
In your opinion, why do the Pharisees who claim to see remain guilty (verse 41)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?
In your opinion, how does Paul’s claim in Romans 3:22-31 that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” help us to understand the difference between the blind man who now sees and the Pharisees who claim to see and are blind in John 9:35-41?
In your opinion, how does the contrast of the blind man who now sees and the Pharisees who are still blind in John 9:35-41 help us to understand the ones who “have not soiled their clothes” and the ones who “have a reputation for being alive, but . . . are dead” in Revelation 3:1-6?

Revelation 20:11-15 – New International Version (NIV)
11 “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.”

What and who did John see (verse 11)?
What “fled from his presence” (verse 11)?
Who did John see “standing before the throne” (verse 12)?
In your opinion, what is the difference between the books and the “book of life” (verse 12)?
How were the dead judged (verse 12)?
What did the sea and death and Hades give up (verse 13)?
Where were death and Hades thrown (verse 14)?
What is the second death (verse 14)?
Who else was thrown into the lake of fire (verse 15)?
In your opinion, what is the basic message of this passage?

In your opinion, how does John’s discussion in John 3:22-31 about the blind man and the Pharisees help us to understand his vision in Revelation 20:11-15 about the books and the book of life and those who are thrown into the lake of fire?
In your opinion, how does Paul’s statement that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” in Romans 3:22-31 help us to understand what might be in the books of Revelation 20:11-15?  In addition, how does Paul’s discussion about being “justified by faith” in Romans 3:22-31 help us to understand how people’s names are recorded in the “book of life” of Revelation 20:11-15?

In your opinion, how does John’s vision of the books and the “book of life” in Revelation 20:11-15 help us to understand the statement that Jesus makes in Revelation 3:1-6 to the church of Sardis that He knows “your deeds” and that “you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead”?
In your opinion, what do these passages, from Revelation, Romans and John show us about ourselves today?
