The Great Commission – A Study of Matthew
May 12, 2013
We will begin at the end:
• Matthew
28
• New
International Version (NIV)
• The
Great Commission
• 18Then
Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been
given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Reverend Mark Hickman in the Lay Speaker’s Academy this fall
indicated that these are the last words of Jesus that Matthew chose to share;
therefore we can assume that he viewed them as the most important. Reverent Hickman also indicated that
everything in Matthew leads up to these words, and is really a part of or
explanation of the Great Commission. In
this study of Matthew we will begin at the end, try to understand the various
components of the Great Commission, and the go to the beginning and see how the
rest of Matthew foreshadows and explains the Great Commission.
What are the various components of this most important
message of Matthew?
Who
gave the commission?
Why is
He able to give the commission?
How are
the hearers to begin?
What
are the hearers to do?
Where
is this to take place?
Who
or what is a disciple?
How is
the process of making disciples to begin?
What
does this accomplish?
Who are
the people of the nations to be set apart in?
What
is baptism?
What is
the next step?
What
is teaching?
What is
to be taught?
The passage ends with a promise.
Who is
the promise from?
Who is
the promise to?
What is
the promise?
So, what are the components of the Great Commission?
