July 28, 2013 - The Great Commission - A Study of Matthew - The Magi

The Great Commission – A Study of Matthew

Matthew 28 - New International Version (NIV) – The Great Commission
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The Magi
       Matthew 2:1-12
Where was Jesus born?

Who reigned when he was born?

Who came to Jerusalem at that time?

In your opinion, why did they go to Jerusalem and to King Herod?

What did they ask about?

How did King Herod feel about their question?

In your opinion, why did he feel that way?

Who did King Herod call together?

What question did he ask them?

How did they answer King Herod?

What did they base their answer on?

When King Herod met with the wise men, what did he learn from them?

What did King Herod instruct them to do?

How did the wise men respond to the star:
                What was their action?

                What was their emotion?

How did the wise men respond to the child and his mother?

Why did they return home another way?

·         Micah 5:1-4
Who is surrounding Jerusalem?

What are they doing to the leader of Israel?

In your opinion, what does that mean?

How is Bethlehem described?

Who will come from Bethlehem?

Where are the origins of this person?

In your opinion, what does it mean when it says the people of Israel will be abandoned?

In your opinion, what is the time when the woman in labor gives birth to the son?

In your opinion, who are the countrymen or brothers who are returning from exile?

Who will stand to shepherd or lead his flock?

In whose strength and majesty will he shepherd and lead?

How will his people live?

·         Micah 5:5-15
What will the ruler born in Bethlehem be a source of?

Will the fact that this ruler has been born stop the Assyrians?

In your opinion, when Micah speaks about the Assyrians is he talking only about the people from Assyria?

In your opinion, if not just people from Assyria then who is being talked about?

What will happen when the Assyrians invade?

What will the few, remnant, left in Israel do?

Will they be successful?

In your opinion, will this occur in the same way as the Assyrian invasion, with troops?

In the day – or at the time – that the people of Israel triumph, what will God do:

With weapons?

           With walls and defenses?

           With witchcraft?

           With idols?

           With shrines?

           What will be poured out?

In your opinion, what does this passage teach us about the passage in Matthew?

·         1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
How will the day of the Lord come?

What will people be saying when it comes?

What will happen to the people saying these things?

What is different about the brothers and sisters to whom the letter is written?

What are the brothers and sisters children of?

Which means they are not children of or belong to what?

How are they to be?

What is night a time for?

How are those who live in the light to behave?

What are they to be protected by?

What did God decide to do for us?

Through whom did he accomplish that?

How did God make it possible for us to live with him forever?

Does it matter if we are dead or alive when he returns?

How are we to respond to what God has done?

In your opinion, what does this passage teach us about today’s passage in Matthew?

So, what do the Magi and the Scriptures lead us to understand about the great commission?

So, what components of the Great Commission does this illustrate?
1)      Jesus
2)      All authority in heaven and on earth
3)      Go and make disciples
4)      Baptize them
5)      Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
6)      Teaching them to obey everything
7)      I am with you always
8)      All Nations
9)      Obey Commandments

Next, back to Matthew 2:13
